Position Summary:  

 

The primary job responsibilities of the Mechanic Level III is to be responsible and accountable for providing quality mechanical repairs and maintenance work up to their level of certification, utilizing all resources available within the shop area. This Mechanic performs a full range of maintenance functions involving mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic components. This class differs from the Mechanic Level II position, given the higher skill level, and greater independence. This position represents the Journeyman level class in this series and should be able to address any shop repairs to all equipment as needed. The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed with the proper certification and experience. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the class.

The Mechanic Level III will provide ongoing preventive maintenance to include all emergency repairs and roadwork necessary. Performs maintenance and repairs on all fleet vehicles, including but not limited to diagnosing, disassembling and assembling components and engines. The primary objective of the Mechanic Level III is to provide a safe, qualified shop environment for himself as well as other technicians while being available to answer questions both to the field personnel and supervisors. Must provide their own basic hand tools. Employee satisfies all of the requirements outlined as a Level I and Level II Mechanic. 

 

Essential Functions:

The Mechanic Level III may be assigned one or more duties. These duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

                       

  • Disassembles and performs partial or complete overhaul of engines, transmissions, differentials other assemblies and sub-assemblies. 
  • Uses gauges, special tools, and specialized equipment to diagnose mechanical failure or problems (such as electronic diagnostic equipment, infrared machine for exhaust emissions, and air conditioning recharging machine). 
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle problems. 
  • Makes wheel alignments and balances wheels.
  •  Installs and/or adjusts brakes, heaters and defrosters.
  • Replaces worn or broken parts. 
  • Learns new technology and repair and service procedures and specifications.
  •  Repairs automotive equipment (such as alternators, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, pumps, and carburation systems).
  •  Operates vehicles to diagnose problems and validate that repairs have been completed.
  • Constructs, maintains or services shop equipment as necessary.
  •  Repairs gasoline and diesel engines. 
  • Repairs equipment and machinery as necessary. 
  • Performs duties of previous level in series, as listed below. 
  • Dispenses fuel, checks and refills fluid levels and changes oil and filters, as necessary
  • Makes minor adjustments and repairs on equipment (such as repairing and/or replacing tires, head and tail lamps, muffler clamps, windshield wipers, and brakes and suspension)
  • Checks equipment for defects (such as cracked or broken hoses or belts, worn tires, and inoperative lights)
  • Removes and replaces batteries
  • Oils and greases equipment
  • Test drives vehicles to assure proper working order, and delivers vehicles for servicing or refueling
  • Cleans vehicles
  • Cleans garage area and maintains shop equipment
  • Disassembles and cleans vehicle parts
  • Fixes door handles and locking mechanisms.
  • Expected to comply with company policies and procedures, loss prevention, safety, and environmental codes and ordinances. Engine and Component Repair: able to diagnose major engine or other component problems, and dismantle, check, and replace parts as needed to rebuild and return the engine or component to service. Able to dismantle, check and determine parts needing replacement or machining, and reassemble and tune the engine (or component), and reinstall the engine or component in the machine from which it was removed.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions and performs vehicle repairs (e.g. adjust/test steering, electrical, cooling, lubricating, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, power steering units, clutches, transmissions
  • Diagnoses and repairs electronic controlled equipment components; Fuse blocks, BCM, PCM and ABS systems.
  • Diagnose, maintain, repair and recondition hydraulic systems; diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears and chain drives
  • Trains staff, as directed, in specific task, job practices and procedures of auto/equipment repair to improve and maintains the performance levels of these employees.
  • May perform moderate supervisory roles when Fleet Manager or Fleet Lead are not accessible.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Current state driver’s license.
  • At least 5+ years of experience repairing and performing preventative vehicle maintenance on emergency vehicles or equivalent.

 

Education Requirements:

The individual in this position must possess the following education requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • 6-8 ASE Certifications are expected to be held and maintained. The five (5) preferred ASE Certifications (A4 Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical, A7 Heating and AC, A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines) any remaining combination is acceptable.

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.  Ability to work in small, confined areas with arms extended over head for extended periods of time. Ability to bend, stoop, squat and reach/extend arms repeated times daily, and ability to perform repetitive motions. The employee must regularly lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 Occasionally: Must have the ability to lift, carry and balance up to 50 pounds, walking outside, pushing, pulling, climbing, carrying, sitting, flexibility.

 Frequently:      Good manual dexterity, with the ability to perform all tasks related to the position of Mechanic Level 3. Hearing/listening, clear speech, smelling, walking inside, lifting, reaching, kneeling, stooping, bending, and driving company vehicles.

 Constantly:      Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time, possess hand-eye-foot coordination and color recognition.

Occasionally: Fax machine, copy machine, hole-punch, calculator, laminator, Gurney, pager, wheelchair, telephone, calculator, copy machine, hydraulic lift, impact wrench.

 Frequently:                  Printer, telephone, cell phone, clock., company vehicle,

 Constantly:                  Maintenance tool, hand, electrical tools and computer.

The Mechanic Level 3 also occasionally works in extreme hot and cold, temperature changes, noise, fumes/odors/mists. The Mechanic Level 3 frequently works independently, and often engages in face-to-face and verbal contact with business clients.

 

Driving approximately 10% of time.
